Advertising enters the chat: why AI Ads will change the future of brands
Posted by
Advertising has always followed attention. When people moved from newspapers to television, brands followed. When people moved from search engines to social media, brands followed. Now, as more people move from searching to asking, comparing and deciding inside AI tools, advertising is following again.
But this shift feels different. Ads inside AI platforms are not just another placement in an already crowded digital ecosystem. They appear much closer to the moment of decision, inside an environment where people are not simply scrolling, but actively looking for help, clarity and recommendations.
OpenAI is already building this direction into ChatGPT. The company says ads may appear for users on Free and Go plans, while Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu accounts will not have ads. OpenAI also states that ads are separate, clearly labelled, do not influence answers and that conversations remain private from advertisers.
From attention to intention
Traditional digital advertising has often been built around interruption. A user watches a video, scrolls through a feed or reads an article, and an ad appears somewhere in that experience. AI advertising changes the context because it has the potential to appear in moments of intention, when someone is actively trying to:
- plan something;
- compare options;
- understand a product or service;
- solve a specific problem;
- make a decision.
OpenAI describes ChatGPT Ads as a way for advertisers to reach users as they explore, compare and decide within a conversational experience, using signals such as the current conversation context, ad content, landing page and advertiser-provided hints to determine relevance.
For advertisers, that is powerful because the message can appear closer to a real need. For users, it can be useful only if the ad feels relevant, transparent and respectful of the conversation. That balance matters because in AI, trust is not a secondary benefit. It is the product itself.
Why this is not just another ad platform
The most important change is not that ChatGPT may show sponsored links. We have seen sponsored links before. What matters is that advertising is entering an environment people use for guidance, not entertainment.
That makes the expectations higher. A social media ad can be ignored as part of the feed. A search ad can be understood as part of the results page. But a chatbot sits closer to the user’s thinking process. People use it to simplify decisions, reduce uncertainty and make sense of information. This means any sponsored message inside that space must work harder to prove that it belongs there.
This is why AI ads may become less about pushing messages and more about earning relevance. Brands that rely only on visibility may struggle. Brands that are clear, useful and easy to understand may have an advantage.
The trust problem
The biggest risk for AI advertising is not technical. It is perceptual. Even when ads are labelled and separated from the answer, users may still ask themselves whether the sponsored placement is influencing the experience. Is the answer independent? Is the advertiser there because it is relevant? Is the recommendation organic or shaped by commercial interest?
A TechRadar writer who tested ChatGPT’s ad-free option described the sponsored links as easy to ignore but also pointed to the trade-off: a cleaner experience can come with reduced usage, making ads something some users may accept in exchange for broader access.
For brands, this is important because people may accept advertising in AI only as long as it feels useful and clearly separated from advice. If that separation becomes unclear, AI ads risk damaging the trust they depend on.
The more significant shift is that ads may become conversational. OpenAI is testing Sponsored Agents, a format that lets people open a conversation with an AI representative of a business after clicking an ad. Users can then ask questions about that business’s products or services.
This changes the role of advertising. A brand message will no longer be only:
- a headline
- a visual
- a CTA
- a landing page
- a campaign asset
It may become a dialogue, a guided experience or a micro-consultation. OpenAI has also introduced tools that allow advertisers to create, update and analyse campaigns through natural-language prompts inside ChatGPT, which shows that AI is not only changing the ad format, but also the way advertising work gets done.
That means brands will need more than good campaign copy. They will need clear positioning, consistent messaging and a way of answering questions that feels useful without becoming pushy. This is where many brands may discover a deeper problem: they are not ready to be conversational. Not because they lack content, but because they lack clarity.
The visual layer is coming too
The next stage is not only conversational, but also visual. OpenAI announced a new visual ad format that will be tested during image generation in ChatGPT for Free and Go users, initially in the US with a selected group of advertisers. The company says these ads will be clearly labelled, separate from the generated image and will not influence ChatGPT’s answers.
ALM Corp also reported that ChatGPT will start showing ads next to generated images, connecting the update to expanded measurement capabilities and brand suitability assessments.
This matters because image generation is not just a playful feature. People use AI visuals for inspiration, mood boards, product ideas, home design, presentations and creative exploration. If ads enter that space, brands may appear not only when people ask for information, but also when they imagine possibilities.
That creates opportunity, but also pressure. When advertising appears near creative output, it needs to feel context-aware, visually relevant and respectful of the user’s process. A poorly placed ad will not just feel irrelevant. It may feel intrusive.
AI ads will probably not replace traditional channels. Search, social media, video, newsletters, events and websites will still matter. But AI advertising will change what brands need to prepare for.
The brands that perform well in this new environment will not be the ones that simply shout louder. They will be the ones that are:
- easier to understand
- easier to trust
- easier to recommend
- useful in the moment
- consistent across touchpoints
This connects with a larger truth about digital presence. Mailchimp defines digital presence as the touchpoints where an audience can find and interact with a brand online, from websites and social media to email marketing and advertising. In an AI-driven environment, that presence may also include how clearly a brand can be understood, summarized and recommended inside conversational tools.
In a conversational environment, vague branding becomes a bigger problem. Generic content becomes easier to ignore. Inconsistent messaging becomes harder to hide. Because AI does not only distribute information. It organizes it, summarizes it and often becomes the first layer between a person and a brand.
Our take
AI ads will not make brand strategy less important. They will make it more important.
As advertising moves from feeds and search results into conversations, brands will need to do more than appear at the right time. They will need to be clear enough to be understood quickly, relevant enough to feel useful and consistent enough to build trust across every interaction.
For us, this is where the real work begins. A brand that does not know how to explain itself will struggle in a space built around questions and answers. A brand with vague positioning, generic messages or disconnected content will not become stronger just because it enters a new advertising channel.
The future of advertising may not belong to the loudest brand in the feed, but to the one that knows who it is, what it stands for and how to create value inside the conversation. Because when AI becomes part of the decision-making process, clarity is not just a communication advantage. It is a brand advantage.
